E&M Safety

Public EducationOne of our key roles at EMSD is keeping the public safe from electrical, mechanical and gas accidents or incidents. Apart from the implementation and enforcements of safety legislation as well as the introduction of a wide range of safety standards and practices, we are also actively involved in promoting energy efficiency. Public education is an important aspect in our activities in this area as we work to foster an understanding and awareness of the issues involved and to reinforce positive safety practices within the community. Taking this message to the community, we are actively promoting a number of public education activities, ranging from publications, promotional and advertising campaigns, posters and mailouts to carnivals, road shows, games, contests and quizzes to safety talks and seminars.

Letters to Parents - Introduction

Being parents, you must make every effort to prepare your children carefully so that they can excel in achieving a happy and fulfilling life. Yet, do you know that your endeavor is threatened by unhealthy eating habits which increase the risk of your children in developing adverse health conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, heart diseases and stroke?

The issue of 'Letters to Parents' aims to empower parents and carers alike with correct knowledge on healthy eating and ability to distill health information from various sources and health claims on food packages. In this way, they are more ready to make healthy choices and to nurture a healthy new generation.

The writer is identified as a child in the first four issues of 'Letters to Parents', which covered various topics on healthy eating. We trust readers will not only be touched by the child’s desire for growing healthily and happily, but also find wisdom useful for daily practice of healthy eating. The writer in subsequent issues is identified as a dietitian and the emphasis is shifted to the art of eating snacks in a healthy manner, and the know how of understanding the nutrition labels, ingredient lists and claims on food packages. To add fun for reading, comics are also inserted to some of the letters.

Take precaution against H1N1

We would like to remind parents and guardians to take precautions against swine influenza.  The symptoms and mode of transmission of swine influenza in people are similar to regular human seasonal influenza and include fever, lethargy, lack of appetite and coughing.  To prevent possible outbreak of influenza, children with fever and respiratory symptoms are strongly advised not to attend school till 48 hours after fever has subsided.  If your child develop influenza-like symptoms such as fever, sore throat and cough, please consult a doctor for medical advice promptly.  In addition, you may send in 2 to 3 extra facemasks daily and we will help him/her change it when necessary.

Please observe the following measures to prevention of infections advised by the Centre for Health Protection:

  • Keep hands clean and wash hands properly.  Alcohol-based hand rub is also effective when hands are not visibly soiled.
  • Avoid touching eyes, nose or mouth.  Germs spread that way.
  • Wash hands with liquid soap promptly if they are contaminated by respiratory tract secretions, e.g. after sneezing or coughing.
  • Cover nose and mouth when sneezing or coughing.
  • No spitting.  Always wrap nasal and mouth discharges with tissue paper, and dispose of the tissue paper properly in a lidded rubbish bin.
  • Wear mask when symptoms of respiratory tract infection or fever develop.  Seek medical advice promptly.
  • Refrain from school / work if you or your child develops symptoms of influenza.

For the latest information on human swine influenza, please see the Daily Update on Human Swine Influenza at the CHP website (http://www.chp.gov.hk/).  Thank you for your attention!
